Hello from France (in English)

#1 Příspěvek od pandarouge » 01 bře 2018 11:36

Hello, I am the proud owner of 2 Land Rovers: one 109SW SIIA (1969) and a little 88 soft top SIIA (1963).

I bought the 88" when I was 18 years old: my first car ! The problem I have today is that the MOT (control mechnic) said that the rust of the chassis is too much. I am not allowed to drive it and I want to solve this problem. On the other side, the car would deserve a new body paint, new electrical system etc. so I would like to have the 88" receive a full restoration... If I could afford it.

That is the reason why I came on your great forum... A friend of mine had a full refurbishment of his motorbike engine in Czech Republic. People were highly professional, nice, very skilled and price was very acceptable.

My question to you is: would you know or recommend any professional garage to handle a full restoration of my beloved 88" ? I want to give it to someone used to the english cars specificities.

I am looking at all options at the time being and it is a nice occasion to take contact with people like you, sharing the same passion and interests for Landies.

THANK YOU for any suggestions or ideas you might have ! :-P
Thank you to Petr for the help regarding connection.

Kdybych si to mohl dovolit.

Děkuji Petr za pomoc ohledně připojení.

Hello, I can see that my request doesn't get answers, eventhough it was read a lot.

Nikdo neví dobrý mechanik, který dokáže obnovit anglické staromery? :nerd

Mnohokrát vám děkuji za jakýkoli nápad, který byste mohli mít.

I think the key problem is that you are targetting price, which isn't something to catch the eye of anyone who makes a living out of restoring old Landies. Perhaps you might want to list what you want them to do and ask them for quotes, but without seeing the vehicle and evaluating it on the spot, I think you'll have a hard time finding interest here.

There are several skilled, experienced and reasonable guys on this forum with own workshops (some of them advertise their services in the section here: viewforum.php?f=12), but I don't think you started right. I'm sure each of them is very busy, even here, where 99% of Land-Rovers are imported, you won't find anyone good with an empty workshop, waiting for someone to come in and make them busy. Contact the guys directly, give them your budget and I assume you could get a rough list of the things they can do for you more or less within that amount.

In any case, I don't think we're a cheap country anymore, especially in such specialized fields such as this one, so don't expect miracles - in all probability you'd be better off finding a workshop local to yourself and do it there.

Hello, first of all, thank you for the answer ! I appreciate the direct and franc approach.
:hand

I agree that price is a component which is key, as for all of us. But, sorry, it is not correct to say it is my only target and criteria. You are right: I could find a local average mechanic, "cheap" probably, who would do an horrible work on my Landi. I already experienced that... :Ja blb: I had to redo the full work myself.

My approach is to find a specialist, a LR lover, a guy who understands and shares my passion, who can at the same time be affordable.
Put it the other way: not many people can afford a full restoration made by a specialist in Western Europe, these days. The man's labour cost and costs have become so expensive (social contributions, rents, taxes...) that it hardly makes any economical sense to have an old Land Rover renovated !

That is why, I am hoping to find the best of two worlds. Not only the price (as you say, it is not "cheap" anymore and I am very happy to hear that because it means good things for all of you) but also with a lot of skills. Which to me sounds more like "fair price" than "cheap" or than "so expensive I cannot afford". They are actually several workshops around Czech Rep. specialised in restoring classic cars (mainly expensive german cars, ...) so I guess the business is still worth doing for them, and for the owners: a win-win situation ! But I could not really find any specialized in English cars. And we all know how the English cars have there own tricks and secrets that you MUST know if you want to do a proper job.

So, let's see ! Thank youa gain for your message which is useful to understand things.
Talk soon.
